This one is kinda old, but here goes anyway. It was an evening shift back in September of 1994. It was a slow shift so I pulled over to the pay phone to make a quick call. While I was on the phone with my wife (not everyone had cell phones back then like they do now), I heard on the radio that a city unit was in pursuit of a vehicle not far from my location. Well, I immediately hung up the phone and headed in the direction of the pursuit. After traveling about 2 blocks I saw the suspect vehicle shoot across the street in front of me with a city unit close behind. I joined in behind the city unit and was the secondary pursuit unit. We chased the vehicle until the suspect crashed in a ditch and fled on foot. Well, the two city officers, being a little on the heavy side from eating too many donuts, did not give much of a chase so I was left chasing the suspect by myself. I run pretty often and stay in shape so I can give a pretty good chase. Well, the suspect ran through the woods and across a field with me gaining on him. I eventually caught him and tackled him. When I tackled him I felt something crack in my left shoulder and the left side of my neck, my left shoulder, and my left side all went numb. At first I thought I just hit wrong and everything would be fine. But, what was I to do with the bad guy...who didn't want to give up. I was definitely not going to let this idiot get away so I thought to myself that I had to do something quick. While wrestling with him on the ground I noticed that his left ear was near my face. Not being able to move my left arm or shoulder I grabbed his ear with my right hand and twisted with all my might. I told him that if he moved I was going to pull his ear off. I actually meant it too. But, anyway, he took me at my word and didn't move a muscle. Eventually, the city officers arrived, and took custody of my bad guy. It was then that I looked under my uniform shirt and noticed that my left collar bone was sticking out in the front. I said to myself "that can't be good"...and it wasn't. I ended having two surgeries, a steele plate, six screws, a pin, and four months off duty. But, the bad guy went to jail, with a bad ear ache.
